Like an unexpected favour, much of the rain lies unreceived in broad shiny patches along the roadside; hints of emerging green the corners of the smile as the ground gradually accepts the water with shocked delight. We’ve been driving north from Port Alfred for about six hours and in the stretches where it wasn’t steadily drizzling it seemed we had only missed it by a few hours.
